Attitude

November 26, 2008

My project has been evolving since the beginning.  At first I was just generally interested in the tech. used by Disney, but there wasn’t much there.  So it turned into people’s attitude towards children movies and children.  Then for the op-ed It became more generalized.  I took a look at my own pessimism and used the example of Disney movies to oppose and balance my attitude.  It had no mention of tech. or even history.  I am very pleased with the simple message.  You want to know something funny?  I think it was my cousin’s evil step mother who inspired me to write about pessimism and frowning on children.

Seriously Disney (final draft)

November 26, 2008

People take themselves too seriously. They take the world around themselves too seriously. That is their own problem and their own business, and as frustrating as it is for me, it’s not my place to tell them that they are wrong. But these people typically take craft outside of their own profession too lightly. I like to watch children’s movies, just to keep in practice. It would be advice to take if you catch yourself frowning too much.

Children as well as their entertainment can’t be dismissed or brushed off. Outside of elementary school the next generation is being trained by their parents and their pastimes. The saying that children are sponges is true. Even if they don’t understand something the attitude it is presented with is understood. The things films we show them are important. Movie companies like Disney/pixar take that responsibility (however small it may seem) seriously. They produce movies that make the viewer think and uplift the spirit.

The movie Wall-e made 62.5 million in ticket sales. I watched it and I loved it. It is critical of laziness and wastefulness and praises determination. It is designed to get kids thinking about the environment, work and love. All around I’d have to say it was an inspiration success. Wall e draws his inspiration from a movie, just like me – Irony!

I have become too pessimistic. Pessimism rots the soul. The world I live in when I’m a pessimist is filthy and dark and it’s filed with sweaty, angry people. As well as all this my attitude can turn other people into pessimists as well. Ifind nothing more annoying than a perky person. Maybe it’s because I think their naivety is the side effect of idiocy, and maybe sometimes I’m jealous. Just a little.

Once in a DvD’s extra section they showed a kind of tour through pixar studio. They said that they had silly contests and strange tests to keep up moral. They even had a chimpanzee in the office. The studio may not bee that place, and that chimp might have just been there for the vido, but I want it to be that place so much that you might say I need it to be. For me happy inspirational movies have to come from a happy inspired environment. It would be a lie otherwise.

Pixar studios likes to say it makes a movie in four steps; development, pre-production, production, and post-production but it is much more complicated than that. The actual process of making a movie is long and complicated. From script to editing it can take over a year. They put careful thought into their messages and appearances because they want above all else to make good impressions on the next generation. If children’s movies weren’t important they wouldn’t take this much work.

I’m willing to admit that I’m wrong to be angry at the world. It only holds me back and makes those around uncomfortable. All I know is that someone has to be optimistic. If I’m not I can’t expect anyone else to be. But it is nice to lean on someone else’s attitude for a while. I don’t think I’ll ever be that kind of person, as much as I think I’d like to be. but those people and the silliness they encore is very necessary. Pessimists like me need annoyingly sunny bouncy people. So the next time you feel like scoffing at someone for being silly think of yourself at ten or eight. If that doesn’t help you out then you’re too deep in for any of my advice to help.

Oh my aching face,

November 19, 2008

Have you heard of Bell’s Palsy?  It is a temporary condition that makes you look like popeye.  One of your facial nerves (in my case the left one) gets infected, typically with the herpeis zoster virus.  The nerve bloats and puts pressure on it’s self in the canal it goes through in the skull.  That presure keeps the nerve from working.  Sooo, half of your face stops moving for a week or two or three.  I realised that something was wrong nearly two monts ago at one in the morning, I woke up my mom, she told me to go to bed.  It was numb at first but after three days it got very tender.  My face looks almost perfect again, (thats right, perfect) but it’s still sore.  I was told it would be completly healed by now.  -[insert lopsided frowny face]-
